Sycamore Finishes in Top 5 in National Science Bowl for 2nd Consecutive Year

Science Bowl competition

For the second consecutive year, Sycamore School's Science Bowl team finished in the top 5 in the nation, finishing 5th at the 2023 National Science Bowl competition in Washington, DC.

"The opportunity to meet and compete with some of the brightest scientific minds in the country is an experience like no other," Science teacher and Science Bowl coach David Schuth says. "The students had their peak performance of the entire year, working as a team and encouraging each other to greater heights."

Five students from Sycamore represented Indiana: Derek Ai (8th), Sameer Zaidi (8th), Nathan Zhang (8th), Sonali Guttikonda (8th), and Shayen Maun (7th) competed against 46 other middle schools who had also earned an invitation to Nationals, from across the nation and US territories, including California, Texas, New York, Alaska, Hawaii, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico.

Sycamore swept their division during the Round Robin portion of the tournament, earning a spot in the Double Elimination competition.

"To realize that you are at the top of your game and one of the top teams in the nation, is both an exhilarating and humbling experience," Schuth says.

They are back in class at Sycamore today. Congratulations to Coach Schuth and the team.
