Sycamore Academy Summer Scholars Leadership Academy
June 8th - 12th, 8:30 am - 4:00 pm, 4th - 7th Grade, Cost $295 for the week. The Sycamore Summer Scholars Leadership Academy is a new and unique opportunity for our older students to gain instruction and firsthand experience in leadership. The camp runs simultaneously with Sycamore Academy Summer Scholars day camp. Sycamore Scholars Junior Leaders (SSJL’s) will participate in Elective 1 with the camp. For Elective 2, the SSJL’s will participate in a leadership training elective. During that time they will follow a leadership curriculum while also preparing for the rest of the day. SSJL’s will plan and execute the all camp game and then be small group leaders during the all camp problem based learning activity. From 3:45 pm – 4:00 pm each day, the SSJL’s will debrief with the instructor’s about how things went, make suggests for improvements the next day, and discuss any issues they have identified.
July 13th – 23rd (Monday - Thursday), 1 pm – 4 pm, 5th – 8th Grade, Cost $135/wk or $250 for both weeks. Students will learn to drive, build, and program a robot to conduct specific tasks. Both the VEX and Lego Mindstorm robot systems will be used.
July 13th –24th, 9 am – 12 pm , 5th – 8th Grade, Cost $275 for both weeks, $150 for one week. Students will take the rolls of astronaut, mission scientist, spacecraft technician, medical officer, flight control leader, mission analyst, and more. After training for these positions, the team will conduct a simulated space flight in Sycamore’s Space Shuttle Simulator. While in “space” the astronauts will conduct science experiments and solve problems thrown at them by mission control personnel. The final day (7/24) will end at 2:00 pm in order to have time for the mission.
July 13th – 24th, 9 am – noon, 5th – 8th Grade, Cost $175/wk or $300 for both weeks. Mr. Tormoehlen and Mr. Fischer have worked together to develop . It is our most popular offering with well over 100 students attending last year. The primary focus of this camp is to teach students math problem solving skills. We focus on general problem solving techniques, but also teach specific lessons on material not often taught in a traditional classroom. This year there will be two types of classes offered. Competition classes designed to help students wanting to improve in the popular middle school math competitions MATHCOUNTS, AMC 8, and the AMC 10. The other is Exploratory classes which are non-competitive problem solving classes. Click on the link above to learn more details about the different options available.
(Monday – Thursday), 1 pm – 4pm, 6th
grade, cost $135/wk or $250 both weeks. This course offers a gentle introduction to fundamental computer science concepts using the Python programming language. Emphasis will be placed on developing problem-solving skills to create software programs and several hands-on activities will be incorporated throughout the course to reinforce concepts and promote active learning. No prior experience is necessary and beginners are encouraged to attend. Week 2 will pick up where week 1 leaves off.Sycamore Debate Camp

grade, cost $135/wk or $250 both weeks. If you love digging into current, hot topic issues, uncovering holes in your opponents’ positions, and persuading others during arguments come check out debate camp! Debaters of all levels of experience will research and support a variety of assertions for both sides of our topics. The camp is designed so students can attend either week or both weeks. Debates will be in groups of three, so students that attend both weeks will practice more advanced techniques during the second week.
