Sycamore Academy Summer Scholars

June 18th - 22nd, 8:30 am - 4:00 pm, 4th - 8th Grade, Cost $275 for the week.  The Sycamore Academy Summer Scholars day camp is tailored toward academically motivated and curious students looking for an invigorating summer camp experience designed to challenge the students academically in a fun atmosphere.  The goal is to provide high academic impact while maintaining a low stress environment typical of a summer camp.  Each morning students will experience 2 academically challenging courses followed by an all camp activity.  Each afternoon students will have a resource time to work on material from the morning classes and then finish with an exciting, week long problem based learning activity.

Robotics Camp

July 16th – 26th (Monday - Thursday), 1 pm – 4 pm, 5th – 8th Grade, Cost $150/wk or $275 for both weeks. Students will learn to program a basic LEGO Mindstorms robot, then build a robot of their own design to conduct specific tasks.

July 16th –27th, 9 am – 12 pm , 5th – 8th Grade, Cost $275. Students will take the rolls of astronaut, mission scientist, spacecraft technician, medical officer, flight control leader, mission analyst, and more. After training for these positions, the team will conduct a simulated space flight in Sycamore’s Space Shuttle Simulator. While in “space” the astronauts will conduct science experiments and solve problems thrown at them by mission control personnel.

July 16th – 27th, 9 am – noon, 5th – 8th Grade, Cost $175/wk or $300 for both weeks. Mr. Tormoehlen and Mr. Fischer have worked together to develop this camp over the last 5 years. It is our most popular offering with well over 100 students attending last year. The primary focus of this camp is to teach students math problem solving skills. We focus on general problem solving techniques, but also teach specific lessons to material not often taught in a traditional classroom. This camp is also designed to help students wanting to improve in math competitions.

July 16th – 26th (Monday – Thursday), 1 pm – 4pm, 6th – 10th grade, cost $135/wk or $250 both weeks. This course offers a gentle introduction to fundamental computer science concepts using the Python programming language. Emphasis will be placed on developing problem-solving skills to create software programs and several hands-on activities will be incorporated throughout the course to reinforce concepts and promote active learning. No prior experience is necessary and beginners are encouraged to attend. Week 2 will pick up where week 1 leaves off.

Intermediate Computer Science

July 23rd - 26th (Monday - Thursday), 12:30 pm - 4:00 pm, 7th - 10th grade, cost $135/wk + $100 supplies. In this exciting camp, Mr. Ritz will lead students through a process that will result in them building a working Simon game from scratch.  Students will begin the week reviewing all of the programming necessary to write the code for the game.   Then the students will install the code on a Raspberry pi and connect it up to a bread board with sensors and lights that will be the hardware for the game.  This course offers the next level for students that have taken Introduction to Computer Science during the summer at Sycamore or Park Tudor or as an elective at Sycamore.  It is also appropriate for students who have experience with Python or another programming language from another setting (this includes students who have taken AP Computer Science).   Prior to the week of camp, students will be given some material to review that they will be expected to know.  There will be review times available the week before for anyone that needs to brush up on the programming and possibly the morning of the first day.
