Curriculum Goals

Goal of Sycamore's Art Program:

The overall goal of this program is twofold: to achieve visual literacy on the part of the student - to create an educated, critically adept "visual consumer" - and to enhance the pupil's creative abilities.

Art Curriculum:

In Grades One through Three, emphasis is on vocabulary of the Elements and Principles of Art. In grade Four the emphasis is on Folk Arts, the Tribal Art of Africa and the Americas and the Arts of China and Japan. Grade Five begins a survey focusing on but not limited to Western Art. The program corresponds with the humanities curriculum. This study goes through the twentieth century, ending in the Seventh Grade. Eighth Graders explore art criticism and aesthetics in greater depth while developing personal style.
