UNIT 2: CLASSICAL GREEK AND ROMAN ART AND ARCHITECTURE

Introduction presented with slides and filmstrips. Final project: a paper mosaic reflecting the Roman style or a Greek or Roman theater mask.

UNIT 3: MEDIEVAL ART AND ARCHITECTURE

Introduction presented with slides and filmstrips. Incorporate video on and discussion of Islamic art and architecture. Final project: a manuscript illumination in the Medieval style, using a single letter from any appropriate alphabet.

Independent study project: Students are to pretend they have landed on another planet. They will describe the culture they find there and "bring back" an artifact made by the culture.

AT THE CONCLUSION OF EACH UNIT, STUDENTS MIGHT BE ASKED TO SUBMIT (AT LEAST) FOUR QUESTIONS ABOUT THE WORKS THEY HAVE VIEWED. ONE QUESTION MUST BE FROM AN AESTHETIC PERSPECTIVE, ONE FROM A CRITICAL PERSPECTIVE, ONE FROM A HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE AND ONE QUESTION ABOUT PRODUCTION.

THE YEAR WILL CONCLUDE WITH A FIELD TRIP TO CHICAGO. THE TRIP WILL INCLUDE VISITS TO THE ART INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO, THE FIELD MUSEUM, AND "MEDIEVAL TIMES" AND WILL COVER ARTIFACTS AND TOURS APPROPRIATE TO ALL THREE UNITS.

Note: In Grades Five, Six and Seven, all humanities classes will be studying the same cultures and years at (roughly) the same time. Thus, when this curriculum calls for a unit on classical Greek art and architecture, the student will also be studying ancient Greece in language arts, social studies, music, etc. All introductions will stress historical and cultural context. Field trips and speakers may be scheduled through any of the humanities classes.

Student self-portraits in Egyptian style.
"Medusa" - One of our Greek/Roman Theater masks.
A (paper) mosaic in the Roman style.
A Medieval manuscript illumination, done on "parchment" paper.
Independent study project: a jeweled bell brought back from another planet.
