Third Grade and Project Examples
SAME FORMAT AS GRADES ONE AND TWO, EXCEPT THAT THE FOCUS WILL BE ON PRINCIPLES OF ART
The year will begin with a lengthy review of color theory, using appropriate demonstrations, worksheets and visuals. The students will construct a color wheel and take a test on this material. Other elements will be reviewed verbally throughout the year. By the end of Third Grade, students should be familiar with the following concepts and vocabulary dealing with elements:
Color- definition; the color wheel; primary, secondary, intermediate, and tertiary colors; color mixing; neutrals; warm and cool; color families; complementary, analogous, monochromatic and triadic color schemes; basic physics of light; difference between pigments and light.
Value- definition; light and dark; black and white; tint and shade; grays; shading; as property of a color.
Line- definition; contour; calligraphic; variety; quality; outline, direction; movement (see below)
Texture- definition; real; illusion; texture of medium.
Shape- definition; geometric; organic; irregular; positive and negative; related; distorted (see below)
Form- definition; relation to shape; geometric; irregular or organic; modeling
UNITS:
BALANCE - definition; formal (symmetry); radial; informal
EMPHASIS- definition; discuss ways of achieving (i.e. size, repetition, placement, DISTORTION and CONTRAST)
UNITY -definition; discuss ways of achieving (i.e. repetition, similarity, overlapping, gradation, etc.)
RHYTHM AND MOVEMENT- definition
PATTERN-definition; motif
Media and methods will include (but not be limited to): crayon, marker, ink, chalk, tempera paint, watercolor, pencil, printmaking, transfer and resist.
THE YEAR WILL END WITH A CLASS SPENT CONTRASTING AND COMPARING TWO DISPARATE ARTWORKS, USING ALL APPROPRIATE VOCABULARY AND EXPLORING EVOCATIVE CONTENT.
DURING THE YEAR, STUDENTS WILL VISIT THE INDIANAPOLIS MUSEUM OF ART FOR A DOCENT-LED TOUR FOCUSING ON ELEMENTS AND PRINCIPLES.
